Sing and Sign is a music programme designed to encourage speech and language development in pre-verbal babies and toddlers using songs, rhymes and gestures. Running as an online course, also in nurseries and parent and child classes as an international franchise, Sing and Sign was the first programme in the UK to formally teach enhanced gesture, also known as ‘baby signing’ through music.

History

Sing and Sign was developed in 2000 and launched in January 2001[1] by the founder and creator Sasha Felix[2]. Educated at the Purcell School of Music, Sasha Felix’s musical career began as a member of singing group ‘The Little Foxes’, releasing two singles ‘Crossed Line’ and ‘Golden Bodies’[3] in 1983 on C&D Records. Appointed as musical director to The Beverley Sisters in 1989 (Sasha is Teddie Beverley’s daughter[4]) theatre work as a piano player followed before starting a family in 1997. Sasha’s daughter Francesca had developmental speech delay as a baby and it was the resulting exposure to speech and language therapy techniques which inspired the Sing and Sign Approach.

In 2002, Sing and Sign launched as a franchised business opportunity. Classes in Bristol[5], Southampton[6], Bedford[7], Watford[8] and Edinburgh[9] were among the earliest to join. By 2016 Franchisees numbered over a hundred including some under international licence[10].

The Sing and Sign Approach

More than just a music class, Sing and Sign combines elements of early intervention speech and language therapy such as attention, repetition, commenting, gesture and numerous other strategies. The programme is delivered using Sasha Felix’s original songs[11], adaptations of traditional nursery rhymes, toys and props. Sales of the original Sing and Sign Video[12] (released in 2001 and repackaged in 2007 by Abbey Home Media) earned a Platinum disc in 2016[13], awarded by the BPI. A Gold disc for the second DVD ‘More Sing and Sign’ followed[14]. Supporting material includes lift-the-flap books (illustrated by Claude Bonnaud) featuring Sing and Sign’s mascot Jessie Cat plus a songbook, six CD titles available across music streaming platforms and a Jessie Cat soft toy[15]. As part of the Teach Yourself series, Hodder Education published ‘Teach Yourself Baby Signing’[16] in 2010 (written by Sing and Sign educator Jane Jarvis) with the Sing and Sign curriculum as its source material
