SmartStop Self Storage Reit Inc is a self storage company based in Ladera Ranch, CA. SmartStop Self Storage brand was founded by H. Michael Schwartz in 2009. H. Michael Schwartz is the CEO and Executive Chairman of SmartStop Storage.
Strategic initiatives
In March 2026, SmartStop announced a strategic joint venture with AXCS Capital aimed at providing bridge debt and preferred equity capital to owners and developers of self-storage properties.[1] Reporting by the Los Angeles Times described the partnership as an effort to extend SmartStop’s presence beyond owning and operating facilities into offering capital solutions within the self-storage market and noted that the venture was expected to target projects across North America.[2]
