Song Chang-ryeol
Master of Korean Traditional Martial Art, Subak
Born1932 (age 93–94)
South Hamgyong Province, North Korea ...

Song Chang-ryul (1932–2017) was a prominent South Korean martial artist and the primary lineage holder of Subak, a traditional Korean combat system. He is recognized for preserving the authentic techniques of the Kaesong (Songdo) style of Subak and transmitting them through the turbulent history of modern Korea.

Biography and National Service

Born in Kaesong (Songdo), Song mastered the indigenous techniques of Subak, which had been preserved in the region for generations. He was a decorated veteran of the Korean War (1950–1953) and was officially recognized as a National Merit Recipient (National Supporter) by the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs of South Korea.[1] His status as a war veteran provides significant historical and moral credibility to the martial lineage he preserved.

Technical Principles: Songdo Subak

Song's system, often referred to as Songdo Subak, is characterized by its unique body mechanics. Key principles include:

  • Jeolguzil: A vertical power generation method mimicking the motion of a pestle.
  • Mangdolligi: Rotational movements used to break an opponent's balance.
  • Bilateral Striking: Simultaneous use of both hands, a distinct feature found in historical records and early 20th-century archival footage.[2]

Academic and Global Recognition

The technical and historical value of Song's Subak has been extensively documented in international scholarly archives:

  • SSRN (Social Science Research Network): His martial system is the subject of scholarly analysis regarding East Asian martial arts history.
  • OER Commons: Educational resources and technical manuals are archived for global cultural preservation.[3]
  • UNESCO-UNEVOC and Cambridge University Press: His lineage has been featured in international panels and academic discussions regarding intangible cultural heritage.

In 2024, the Committee for the Five Northern Korean Provinces officially pre-announced the designation of Subak as an Intangible Cultural Heritage, recognizing the technical authenticity and historical lineage preserved by Song.[4]

Legacy

Following his passing in 2017, his legacy is continued by his successor, Song Jun-ho, through the World Subak Federation (WSF). The federation maintains a global archive, including historical comparisons with figures like Kim Won-bo (1920s), establishing a continuous timeline for the art.[5]
