Spark Grove is an upcoming indie multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) mobile game developed and published by WarpWave Studios. The game features an interactive forest environment where magic and nature intertwine. Its visual aesthetic is characterized by a vibrant, cartoon-like 3D art style. The project was first publicly announced on December 22, 2023,[1] and has since entered its Pre-Alpha testing phase.
Gameplay
Spark Grove operates as a mobile MOBA where players take control of distinct heroes known as "Charmers." Players utilize these characters in arena-style multiplayer matches. The combat mechanics have evolved significantly over time; the original concept featured a main attack and three abilities, which was later changed to include a "potion" button. However, the Pre-Alpha build reverted to a system featuring a main attack, standard abilities, and powerful "Ultimate" abilities.[2]
Development Team
Spark Grove is the flagship title of WarpWave Studios, an independent game development company. The core development of the game is spearheaded by the studio leads, Molyan and Alex. Molyan serves as a co-lead, coder, and the primary 3D artist responsible for the game's visual identity.[3] Alex serves as a lead developer and core coder for the game.[4]
Brawl Stars and Supercell Connections
Many members of the Spark Grove development and art teams have deep roots in the community of the Supercell game Brawl Stars, particularly through the "Supercell Make" skin design campaigns. Early concepts for several of Spark Grove’s first characters, including Kurt, Lionel, and Osie, actually originated from a fan-made modification for Brawl Stars.
Notable team members with connections to Supercell include:
- Kakatpoke: The art director for Spark Grove, who later became an official concept artist for Brawl Stars. He was also a Supercell Make winner as part of the "KDA Poltergeist" group, creating the official "Dark Angel Colt" skin.[5]
- Acid, Lukejustluke, Molyan, Merik, Artur, Daviwow: (from the WarpWave Studios team) designed the "Phoenix Heart Janet" (also known as Firewing Janet) for a Supercell Make campaign.[6]
- Reghs: Another developer associated with the project who won a Supercell Make campaign with the "Samurai Desert Gene" (or Dark Samurai Gene) design.[7]
Community and "Spark Time"
To build its community prior to the game's official global launch, WarpWave Studios established an official "Creator Programme." This tiered system incentivizes content creators on platforms such as YouTube and Twitch by offering exclusive perks, including early access to unreleased game builds.[8] Early dedicated playtesters in the community were officially given the title "Ultimate Spark Fans" (USFs).
The development team regularly communicates progress through a dedicated YouTube video broadcast series titled Spark Time. These episodes are utilized to reveal new features, showcase character abilities, and interact directly with the playerbase.[9] Early in the game's community-building phase, the official Discord server even allowed players to interact with AI chatbots programmed with the personalities of Charmers like Dawn, Shade, and Lionel.
Lore and Characters
In Spark Grove, the playable roster is made up of "Charmers," such as Splash, Dawn, Dummy, Paloma, Shade, Osie, Sasha, Lionel and Kurt.
Beyond the main gameplay, the developers have integrated an expansive lore and alternate reality game (ARG) elements into the game's universe. The overarching narrative features a mysterious entity known as "Al'tharyax." WarpWave Studios maintains a hidden, password-protected lore archive on their official website. Players who uncover the password ("youregoingtoregretthis") can access this secret database to uncover deeper narrative elements and teasers regarding the game's universe.[10]
Development Trivia
During the early access and Pre-Alpha playtesting phases, the game experienced several notable and amusing development milestones:
- The character "Splash" was the first Charmer revealed to the public. Prior to his official naming, he was given the fan-made name "Xavier" because his early character model had an "X" on his shirt.
- During early access testing, if a player entered a match with a username longer than 31 characters, a glitch would cause them to spawn as a frozen "Pijohn" entity, unable to move or attack for the entire match.
- Another visual glitch gave the training character "Dummy" comically exaggerated proportions.
- The first enemy type ever revealed to the community was the "Wardens."
