Speed Brake Armed is an American aviation-themed music project and recording studio created by airline pilot and musician Peter Buffington. The project produces original music inspired by airshows, aerobatics, commercial aviation, and military flight demonstration teams, blending elements of rock, cinematic, pop, and reggae. It is operated under Red Eye Music Group LLC.
History
Buffington, born in October 1974, is a major airline pilot for United Airlines, as well as a piano technician and author. He founded Speed Brake Armed as an aviation-inspired music studio. The name refers to the aeronautical term for speed brakes (also known as air brakes or spoilers) used on aircraft to increase drag.
The project has released multiple albums, including the experimental Red Eye, 737 - Airshow America, 737 - Hangar Dance, 737 - St. Erasmus' Airshow, 737 - Diversion, 737 - Island Hopper, and the 18-track Airshow America II (released April 2026). Many tracks feature vocalists credited as Aurora Flare and Radar Vectors.
Speed Brake Armed music is frequently positioned as soundtracks for airshows, aerobatic performances, and flight simulation. The project is a member of the International Council of Air Shows (ICAS), the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA), and the Flying Musicians Association. Buffington has performed or promoted the music at events such as Sun 'n Fun Aerospace Expo and EAA AirVenture Oshkosh.[1][2]

The project has gained attention within the aviation community. "737 Island Hopper" achieved significant early success, surpassing 500,000 streams across platforms shortly after release.[1]
Buffington has been featured in local and aviation media, including coverage of his dual career as a pilot and musician.[1] The project signed an agreement with Greg Koontz Airshows for synchronized aerobatic performances using the track "American Decathlon Dreams" throughout the 2026 airshow season, including at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh.[2]
Speed Brake Armed’s music is scheduled to feature prominently in the Night Airshows at EAA AirVenture 2026.[3]
