Synoptek

Synoptek is an American managed IT services provider (MSP) headquartered in Costa Mesa, California, that provides IT infrastructure management, cloud hosting, cybersecurity, and consulting services to mid-market and enterprise clients.[1]

History

Synoptek was co-founded in 2001 by Tim Britt, a former chief information officer of Ace Hardware Corp.'s online store.[1] The company was an early investment of Newport Beach-based Toba Capital, and in 2015 San Francisco-based private equity firm Sverica Capital Management took a majority stake in the company on undisclosed terms.[1]

By 2019, Synoptek employed about 800 people across nine U.S. offices as well as locations in Canada and India, and reported revenue on track to reach approximately $105–106 million, up from about $93 million the prior year.[1] According to the Orange County Business Journal, the company's core business at the time served 800 to 900 customers, with about 300 "core clients" accounting for the large majority of revenue, and Britt described the mid-market IT services segment as "underserved."[1]

Synoptek grew in part through acquisitions, including the 2018 purchase of Indusa, a Chicago-based Microsoft Dynamics 365 and software development firm with about 230 employees.[2] In May 2022, the company acquired Atlanta-based customer experience agency Macquarium to expand its presence in the southeastern United States; at the time, Synoptek reported pro forma 2021 revenue of about $115 million and roughly 300 "material customers" across North America.[3]

In September 2022, mid-market private equity firm Quad-C Management acquired a majority stake in Synoptek, with Sverica Capital Management retaining a minority position.[4] That December, Synoptek acquired Optistar Technology Consultants, the technology services division of The Vertex Companies, adding offices in New York, Boston, Denver, and Seattle.[4]

In 2025, Britt transitioned from chief executive to executive chairman of Synoptek's board, and Salil Godika, previously chief executive of Synoptek India, was named the company's new CEO.[5]

2019 Ransomware Attack

In December 2019, Synoptek suffered a ransomware attack involving Sodinokibi (also known as REvil), which disrupted operations for many of its clients.[6] According to reporting by security journalist Brian Krebs, sources at the company said intruders used a remote-management tool to install the ransomware and that Synoptek paid an unverified sum in exchange for decryption keys, after the company's only public statement described the incident as a "credential compromise."[6] The incident, which began on December 23, 2019, prompted outreach from the State of California and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to state and local government entities that used Synoptek's services.[6]

Trade publication MSSP Alert independently reported on the attack, noting that sources had also alerted it and sister publication ChannelE2E to the incident.[7] Synoptek's then-CEO Tim Britt told trade publication CRN that the attack affected a subset of the company's 1,178 customers and had been contained by December 26.[6]

Services and Positioning

As of 2025, Synoptek marketed itself using the term "Managed Experience Provider" (MxP), a proprietary positioning describing an approach that combines managed IT services with AI-driven automation and outcome-based "experience level agreements," in place of traditional uptime-based service level agreements.[8]
