the87press is a British independent publisher based in South London. It publishes poetry, fiction, non-fiction and essays. Its online publishing project, theHythe, was relaunched in 2025 as The Hythe Review in collaboration with the Open Library of Humanities.[1][2] Its legal name is The 87 Press C.I.C., a community interest company.[3]

History and publishing

The press was founded in 2018 by Azad Ashim Sharma and Kashif Sharma-Patel.[4] The 87 Press C.I.C. was incorporated in 2018 as The 87 Press Ltd and changed its name to The 87 Press C.I.C. in 2025.[3]

The press publishes contemporary poetry, fiction, non-fiction and essays.[1][4] Its books are distributed by Inpress Books in the United Kingdom and European Union, and by Wesleyan University Press in the United States and Canada.[4]

Books published by the87press include Fran Lock's White/Other, a Poetry Book Society Winter 2022 recommendation, and Sarah Ghazal Ali's Theophanies, which was shortlisted for the 2025 Jerwood Prize for Best First Collection at the Forward Prizes for Poetry.[5][6] In 2025, the press published a UK edition of Lena Khalaf Tuffaha's Something About Living, which had won the 2024 National Book Award for Poetry in its US edition.[7][8]

theHythe and The Hythe Review

theHythe is the87press's online publishing project. In 2021, the press described the name as deriving from the Anglo-Saxon word hȳð, meaning a small river landing place.[9] The archive includes poetry, essays, reviews, interviews and lectures.[10]

In 2025, the Open Library of Humanities announced a collaboration with the87press to relaunch theHythe as The Hythe Review.[2] The journal's submissions page describes The Hythe Review as a biannual journal of poetry and cultural criticism curated by the87press in partnership with the Open Library of Humanities.[11]
