The Charlotten is an American satirical digital media outlet based in Charlotte, North Carolina. Founded in early 2025, the publication produces parodies of local news, regional politics, and cultural trends within the Charlotte metropolitan area.
History
The Charlotten was launched in January 2025 by an anonymous creator. The site’s editorial style mimics traditional journalism and local news broadcasts, often utilizing headlines that address regional issues in Charlotte such as urban development, the Charlotte Area Transit System, and neighborhood-specific stereotypes.[1]
By February 2026, the publication had gained a following of approximately 30,000 across social media platforms and maintained a weekly digital newsletter focused on Charlotte culture.
Notable incidents
In January 2026, The Charlotten published a satirical report claiming that Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) had cancelled classes for the remainder of the academic year. The article was widely circulated on social media, leading the school district to request the publication to remove the post. Following the incident, the publication's creator filed a public records request seeking internal communications from the city of Charlotte regarding the district's reaction to the satire.[2]
Style and reception
The publication has been compared to national satirical outlets such as The Onion, but with a specific focus on hyper-local Charlotte themes.[1]
