Ewell Marion Cheeks

The Cleveland Guide (1929-?) was an African American centered newspaper in Cleveland, Ohio. Eugene Francis Cheeks (November 5, 1897-1965) was its editor and publisher.[1] He had 10 sublings. He attended Western Reserve University.[2]

Cheeks was born in Abingdon, Virginia.[3] Cheeks briefly published the Call and Post.[4] He graduated from Bolton Elementary School and Central High School. He was a Democrat and a Methodist. His address was listed as 2279 East 90th Street.[3]

He and Ewell M. Cheeks advertised as job printers out of the Superior Building in Cleveland.[5] Its address was 6307 Cedar Avenue.[6] In 1942 the paper was documented as a 12-page weekly.[7][8]

Cheeks filed civil rights lawsuits for discrimination and access to police records.[9]

Cheeks was a candidate for Ohio's 21st congressional district in the 1932 United States House of Representatives elections.

Elmer Cheeks and Ewell Cheeks performed in Overtones by Alice Gerstenberg in Cleveland in 1926.[10]

Elmer Cheeks was an electrical engineer with Cleveland Municipal Light. He married Ella Mae Smith in 1929.[11][12] The couple had two sons, Jim and Paul Cheeks, during their 12-year marriage, which ended in his death.[12]

The Guide was established as a monthly paper.[13]
