Create is a modification (mod) for the sandbox video game Minecraft that adds tools and blocks for aesthetic automation, building, and decoration. Created by German developer simibubi and maintained by a team known as Creators of Create, the mod distinguishes itself from other Minecraft technology mods by requiring that gears, shafts, belts, and rotating components be physically arranged to transmit power.[1][2][3]
Since its initial release in 2019, Create has become an influential part of the Minecraft modding ecosystem.[4][5] In 2026, Create developers simibubi and Kryppers were recruited by Hypixel Studios to inform the design of and help develop their sandbox RPG Hytale.[6]
Gameplay
Create implements a rotational power system as part of its core gameplay. Power is generated by water wheels, windmills, or steam engines and is used to power processing machines.[7] Machines animate visibly in the world, and items are processed as physical entities as opposed to within a GUI.[1][8][9]
Key features include contraptions, a dynamic structure system that allows block assemblies to move together, and working trains, which are custom-built by players using blocks.[10][11]
The mod is available for Minecraft versions 1.14.4 through 1.21.1 across multiple mod loaders, including Forge, NeoForge, Fabric, and Quilt.[8]
Development
Create was first released in 2019 and is developed by the Creators-of-Create team. The project is open source and hosted on GitHub, where it has accumulated over 4,400 stars and 1,400 forks as of 2026, with more than 265 contributors.[8]
A major update, version 0.5 ("Full Steam Ahead"), was released in December 2022, introducing a steam power system and a full railway system. Subsequent updates have expanded decorative blocks, added new processing chains (such as crushing and milling), and improved performance for large contraptions.[9]
Create has been translated into over 20 languages through Crowdin and is supported by a Patreon crowdfunding campaign. The development team maintains an official Discord server with over 100,000 members.[12]
Critical reception
Create is widely regarded as one of the most significant Minecraft mods of its era.[1] GameRant described Create's "unique position in the Minecraft modding space" as introducing "new blocks and tools to the game's sandbox world, allowing players to create complex machines that automate much of Minecraft's busywork."[4] PC Gamer has also identified Create as one of several popular mods that "extend the life of the game" by introducing "almost limitless activities."[11]
Reviewers compare the mod's intuitive design to "LEGO instruction booklets" due to the Ponder system, which eliminates the need for external wikis.[11] The mod has also received attention for its extensibility. GameRant reported in 2026 on Create Aeronautics, a popular add-on that adds functional airships and off-road vehicles, demonstrating the mod's role as a platform for community innovation. The add-on, in development since 2021, fully launched on April 18, 2026, and allows players to create "intricate vehicles, such as airships, off-road vehicles, and industrial equipment that can bore straight through the side of a mountain."[4]
Impact and legacy
Create has become a core part of modpacks, including Create: Above and Beyond and All of Create, which build broader progression systems around its mechanics.[13][14] Its influence has spawned a large ecosystem of over 300 add-on mods that expand on create with new features.[15] The mod's popularity has also catalyzed the formation of dedicated modding studios and development teams, including Aes Efficio, which has since grown into a fully-fledged venture-capital-funded development studio, and Luna Pixel Studios, which has accumulated over 85 million downloads across its Create-focused projects.[16]
Create maintains a high ranking on CurseForge and Modrinth, with over 220 million total downloads across both platforms as of mid-2026.[17][9]
Hytale hiring
In April 2026, Hypixel Studios announced that it had hired the development team behind Create to work on its sandbox RPG Hytale.[6] Studio lead Simon Collins-Laflamme stated that the hiring "opens the door to automation and a whole lot more" in the game, suggesting that the Create team's experience in player-driven engineering would inform Hytale's design.[6][18]
