"The Shell" is the twentieth episode of the third season of the animated comedy series The Amazing World of Gumball, and the 96th episode overall. The episode was written by series creator Ben Bocquelet, Guillaume Cassuto, Tom Crowley, Jon Foster, James Lamont, Howard Read, and Tobi Wilson, and directed by Mic Graves. It aired on Cartoon Network on October 9, 2014.[1]

The episode focuses on the relationship between Gumball Watterson and Penny Fitzgerald, resulting in a permanent redesign of Penny's character model.

Plot

During a school play of Beauty and the Beast, Gumball accidentally headbutts Penny while trying to kiss her. The hit cracks Penny’s peanut shell. Backstage, Penny hides a glowing light shining through the crack. She explains that she has to keep her true form hidden because her father would disapprove. Her father, Patrick, notices the crack on the walk home. He gets angry and tells Gumball he can never see Penny again.

Later, Penny climbs up to Gumball's bedroom window to tell him her father is transferring her to another school. Gumball tells her to break out of her shell and be herself. Penny sheds her shell, revealing that she is a shape-shifting, glowing fairy. Gumball is frozen in shock, which Penny mistakes for disgust. Believing she is ugly, she turns into a monster and runs away into the city.

Gumball chases Penny across Elmore while she shifts into different large monsters based on her emotions. She runs into her father and a pest control squad. Gumball defends her from her father's comments, and Patrick realizes he needs to help protect his daughter. Gumball tracks Penny to the edge of the woods in her wolf form. She asks if he could ever love her, and Gumball explains that her looks change based on how she feels, which doesn't change who she is. He confesses his love and kisses her. This calms Penny down, and she stabilizes into her default fairy form as their families watch.

Production

Series creator Ben Bocquelet came up with the concept for "The Shell" to push the romantic storyline between Gumball and Penny forward.[2] Bocquelet wanted to change the usual animated sitcom format by breaking the standard "status quo" reset, giving a side character a permanent visual and physical change.[3]

The transformation meant German animation studio Studio Soi had to completely change Penny's design. Animators retired her original 2D model—a peanut shell with antlers—and replaced it with a shape-shifting form. The crew used fluid 2D lines mixed with color gradients to make her character glow. This allowed her different monster forms to fit in with the show's usual live-action backgrounds and 3D props.[4]

Reception

The episode is regularly cited by animation critics as a major turning point for the show. Trade publications like Animation World Network and Kidscreen noted the episode's technical scale and its departure from standard cartoon continuity.[5][6]

Accolades

At the 2016 British Animation Awards (BAA), "The Shell" won two separate awards. The BAA jury chose the episode for Best Children's Series, calling it "funny, fresh, playful" and praising its open storytelling approach.[7]
