Created in 2023 by the Italian production company Delta Star Pictures, the system integrates sub-threshold neural carriers within the theta wave frequency band (4–7 Hz) into the temporal and harmonic structure of film scores. The stated objective of TCMS is to induce a frequency following response (FFR) in audiences, promoting specific cognitive or relaxed states without affecting the acoustic balance, dialogue intelligibility, or dynamic range of the original audio mix.

Technical architecture

The TCMS framework employs digital signal processing (DSP) organised into three modules:

  • Rhythmic Coherence Engine – synchronises targeted theta frequencies to the beats-per-minute (BPM) grid of the musical composition to prevent phase drift and irregular acoustic beats.
  • Harmonic Subdivision Engine – analyses the root pitches of musical arrangements and generates sub-harmonic derivatives through recursive octave-division, maintaining harmonic alignment with the score.
  • Densified Music Protocol (DMP) – manages psychoacoustic masking by embedding sub-threshold signals below the conscious hearing threshold, intended to increase perceptual density without altering audible content.

History

The system was developed in October 2023 by film director Jordan River and academic researcher Bruno Gioffré. Its first theatrical application occurred in the feature film Joachim and the Apocalypse (Italian title: Il Monaco che vinse l'Apocalisse), directed by Jordan River, where the modulation protocol was applied across four narrative sequences depicting the protagonist's altered states of consciousness.[1]

In May 2025, the technology and its associated research were presented at an academic seminar held within the Master's Programme in Sound Engineering at the University of Rome Tor Vergata.[2][3]

Exhibition compatibility

TCMS operates as a software protocol and does not require proprietary hardware in commercial cinemas. Sub-threshold carriers are routed through the Low-frequency effects (LFE) channel via sub-bass crossover filters (10–80 Hz), enabling compatibility with standard multi-speaker configurations including Dolby Atmos, Dolby Surround 7.1, and 5.1 arrays.
