Topo Designs is an American outdoor apparel and accessories company based in Denver, Colorado. Founded in 2008, it designs and manufactures backpacks, travel bags, and clothing, and operates retail stores in the Denver area alongside an online store.
History
Topo Designs was founded in 2008 by Jedd Rose and Mark Hansen, who began making backpacks in Rose's basement in Fort Collins, Colorado.[2][3] By 2013, the company employed three full-time staff and was shipping about 300 bags a month to more than 75 American retailers, as well as stores in Japan, the United Kingdom, Germany and elsewhere.[2] In November 2013, Topo Designs opened its first physical retail store, a 640-square-foot space in a shipping-container development at 25th and Larimer Street in Denver's River North Art District (RiNo); at the time, the company's headquarters was located on Kalamath Street in Denver, with its sewing operation based in a facility in Broomfield, Colorado.[2]
Matt Williams joined Topo Designs as chief operating officer in 2019 and became chief executive officer in 2023.[1][4] The company's office lease in RiNo lapsed during the COVID-19 pandemic, after which it operated without a dedicated corporate office for several years.[4] In January 2026, Topo Designs signed a seven-year lease for 7,000 square feet at York Street Yards in Denver's Clayton neighborhood to house a new corporate office and retail storefront, its fourth retail location in Denver and twelfth overall; the move was expected to be completed in spring 2026.[4][1] At the time, the company had 35 corporate employees, with plans to grow to about 50 within five to seven years.[1]
Products
Topo Designs manufactures backpacks, travel bags, duffel bags, and accessories, along with a line of apparel for men and women.[2][4] According to Denver Life Magazine, more than 90 percent of the company's products are made using recycled materials, with manufacturing based in Colorado, including a facility in Louisville, Colorado, and repairs handled in Fort Collins.[5]
