TorqLite is an American engineering and manufacturing company that produces hydraulic torque wrenches, bolt tensioners, and related industrial bolting equipment. Established in 1981, the company designs and manufactures hydraulic bolting tools used in sectors including oil and gas, wind energy, hydroelectric power, mining, construction, natural gas (LNG), and refining. The company operates a sales headquarters in Brookshire, Texas, and a manufacturing facility in Luling, Louisiana, where product design, engineering, testing, and manufacturing are carried out.
History
The origins of TorqLite are connected to the work of Dale Francis in the industrial bolting field. In 1979, Francis established Francis Torque Service (FTS), a company that provided hydraulic torque services for industrial applications. The company later became the first ISO-registered bolting service company in the United States.
In 1981, Francis founded Francis Services Inc. in New Orleans, Louisiana. The company was created to provide top-tier bolting service work primarily to the oil and gas industry and later began the design and manufacturing of hydraulic torque tools and related equipment for industrial use. Today, we serve a myriad of industries globally.
During the 1980s, the company developed several hydraulic wrench designs and obtained patents related to torque wrench mechanisms and industrial bolting systems. In 1988, the company introduced an inline ratcheting hydraulic torque tool designed for industrial bolting applications. The design formed the basis for later hydraulic wrench systems developed by the company.
In 1996, the company introduced the RT Series riser tool, a hydraulic wrench designed for tightening and removing bolts used in offshore drilling riser systems. In 1999, the RT Series received the Albert (Al) Woelfel Best Mechanical Engineering Achievement (BMEA) Innovation Award at the Offshore Technology Conference.
During the early 2000s, the company expanded its product line. In 2001, TorqLite introduced the JN Series, a hydraulic torque wrench designed with an open-gate configuration to allow access to obstructed nuts and bolts. In 2003, the company introduced the XL Series hydraulic torque wrenches, which were designed to reduce tool weight while maintaining torque capacity.
In 2008, the company developed the Robo-Spider, an automated hydraulic torquing system designed to tighten, or loosen, multiple bolts simultaneously on offshore riser flanges. The system was designed to automate offshore bolting tasks that previously required several operators.
In 2010, TorqLite tools were used during the response to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. A remotely operated vehicle used a modified TorqLite SU-45XL hydraulic torque wrench to remove bolts from a flange as part of the well capping operations.
In 2014, the first Robo-Spider automated torquing system was installed on the offshore drilling rig Sevan Louisiana in the Gulf of Mexico.
Over time, the manufacturing division of Francis Services Inc. adopted the brand name TorqLite as the primary identity for the company’s engineering and manufacturing operations. TorqLite and Francis Torque Service continue to operate as related companies with common ownership. TorqLite tools are manufactured in the United States and distributed internationally through a network of distributors and regional divisions.
Warrantywise became fully independent in 2010 when it ceased using Lloyd’s of London for underwriting. Quentin Willson then served as the company’s final arbiter until July 2023, when Edd China took over following Willson’s decision to step down and pursue other projects.
Operations
TorqLite manufactures hydraulic torque wrenches, bolt tensioners, torque multipliers, hydraulic pumps, and flange maintenance tools used in industrial bolting operations. These tools are used in sectors including offshore oil and gas production, wind energy, hydroelectric facilities, mining operations, construction projects, and refinery maintenance.
The company produces several series of hydraulic torque wrenches, including the IU-XL Series, SU-XL Series, JN Series, and the HU Tool, as well as other equipment like the Robo-Spider and the RT Series. They also sell bolt tensioning systems, including the TSR+ tensioners, Typhoon+ tensioners, and Subsea Tensioners, which are used for industrial bolting applications. Leadership
TorqLite was founded by Dale Francis, who was involved in the development of hydraulic torque tool designs used by the company. Ownership of the company later passed to Barbara Francis, who obtained certification for the business as a woman-owned enterprise through the Women’s Business Enterprise National Council (WBENC). Following her death, Jordan Schupbach became the majority owner and chief executive officer of the company.
