Nhlahla Surprise Rikhotso (known professionally as Uncle B or Uncle B from Giyani) is a South African musician, songwriter, and performer from Giyani, Limpopo. He is known for his work in Xitsonga Afropop as well as for blending Afro-tech, Amapiano, disco, and Afrobeats into his music.[1]
Early life
Nhlahla Surprise Rikhotso was born and raised in Siyandani Village in Giyani, Limpopo. He initially developed an interest in poetry before transitioning into music and performance.[1]
Career
Uncle B began his music career by releasing an Afropop album in 2018, followed by several singles that gained regional recognition.[1] He is associated with a fusion style that incorporates Afro-tech, Amapiano, disco, and Afrobeats, contributing to a distinctive sound within the Limpopo music scene.[1]
In October 2024, he released an album titled Tsakane, which includes songs such as "Zwau difha" and "Magaraba".[1] The project was supported by a radio tour, with singles receiving airplay on various stations.[1]
Uncle B has also performed at large events in Limpopo, including appearances at Giyani Stadium and regional festivals such as the Limpopo Spring Carnival.
Awards and nominations
Uncle B received recognition for his music through a nomination at the South African Traditional Music Awards (SATMA) for his song Nwa-marhungani.[1]
He has also received a "Best Xitsonga Afropop" award on GCR FM for his contribution to the genre.
Music style
His music blends multiple genres, including Afro-tech, Amapiano, disco, and Afropop, often drawing inspiration from traditional Xitsonga sounds and legendary artists such as Paul Ndlovu and Peter Teanet.[1]
