Draft:Union Straw Works

Union Straw Works was a straw hat business in Foxborough, Massachusetts. Built in 1853 it employed as many as 6,000 workers. A historical marker commemorates its history.[1] It was on Wall Street where the Foxborough Post Office is now located.

Betsey Metcalf of Providence, Rhode Island made a copy of an imported bonnet in 1798. She shared the craft and a cottage industry grew out of it. Erastus P. Carpenter proposed consolidating smaller businesses into a major production facility.[1]

B. W. Thayer & Company’s made a chromolithograph print of the factory.[2] The factory burned May 28, 1900.[3]

Carpenter was a civic leader on Foxborough and a historical marker is at the home he owned in Foxborough.[3]
