Unwording is a 2023 narrative puzzle video game developed and published by Frostwood Interactive and directed by Armaan Sandhu. The game follows Tom, an ordinary man struggling with persistent negative thoughts and cognitive distortions.

Unwording combines adventure gameplay with word puzzles. Players interact with objects and characters to rearrange letters and phrases, transforming negative interpretations into more constructive perspectives. As the story progresses, the gameplay evolves through three different puzzle styles and transitions from two-dimensional environments into increasingly expansive visual perspectives.

The story centres on Tom, a lonely office worker who tends to interpret everyday situations pessimistically. A lack of messages becomes evidence that "no one cares", while ordinary inconveniences reinforce his negative worldview.

After a small bird unexpectedly enters his life, Tom gradually begins to reconsider his assumptions and thought patterns. Over the course of three days, he learns to appreciate relationships, everyday experiences, and the possibility of change. The narrative explores themes of depression, self-talk, and gratitude.

Unwording was developed by Indian independent studio Frostwood Interactive. Prior to release, the developers distributed a public demo through itch.io in 2022.^[1]

Unwording received praise from critics for its emotional storytelling, inventive puzzle mechanics, and its depiction of mental health themes.

Christian Harrison of Try Hard Guides praised the game's portrayal of intrusive thoughts and mental health struggles, describing it as "a brilliant short narrative game about starting towards better" and noting that it felt like it was made by someone who understood those experiences.^[2]

Adventure Game Hotspot commended the game's creative use of wordplay to depict cognitive distortions but criticised its short length and limited depth, concluding that it was "too short and too shallow to make a lasting impact".^[3]

Review aggregation website Metacritic listed reviews from several publications, noting praise for the game's perspective-shifting mechanics while some critics felt that its narrative and gameplay concepts could have been developed further.^[4]
