Valokai is an agglutinative constructed language (conlang) created by Miles Asher. 73The system is based on approximately 75 core roots and a productive set of grammatical suffixes, favoring modular word formation and semantic clarity over a large stock of relatively independent lexical items.

The language’s structure depends on amalgamations of these roots with certain grammatical indicators. Suffixes, which identify tense, state, logical polarity, and social referencing, are always added after roots. A notable feature of the grammar is the inversion indicator “-un” that denies the meaning of a root word or functions to contextualize meaning within compounds. This is in a position to negate a root’s meaning or reference the function of a root within compounds, allowing for the expression of complex concepts via compact morphological units.

Compound construction is also a major feature of Valokai. In this system, two or more roots are compounded to generate new semantic categories with the first root acting as the major noun modified by the other root or roots. Such a framework applies to abstract concepts, which are expressed with designed expansions of the term in use rather than using additional innovative terms.

Other grammatical markers include suffixes for tenses (past, present, and ongoing) and registers that mark formality or emotional contexts. It also makes heavy use of suffixes that detail group identity in terms of singular, male, female, and mixed population identified within a speech, reflecting highly contextual and hierarchical mode of communication.

Valokai is still under development, with its grammatical rules being refined systematically and vocabulary continuously added. Thus, it is considered to be an experimental language as well as a tightly controlled system for artistic communication.
