Velp Scientific
Velp Scientific is an Italian manufacturer of analytical instruments and laboratory equipment headquartered in Usmate Velate, in the province of Monza and Brianza, Lombardy. The company serves laboratories in the environmental, pharmaceutical, food and feed, chemical, and academic research sectors, distributing its products in over 130 countries through a network of distributors and partners.[1][2]
History
Velp Scientifica Srl was founded in 1983 by Ermete Passoni in Usmate Velate, in the Lombardy region of northern Italy. In its early years, the company focused on basic laboratory apparatus, including pumps, stirrers, hotplates and equipment for BOD and COD analysis.[2][3]
The 90s and 2000s
During the 1990s and the first decade of the 2000s, Velp expanded its range towards more complex systems for food analysis and environmental testing, sectors that were growing in response to increasing regulatory requirements for food safety and pollution control. This period saw the introduction of Kjeldahl digestors and distillers, solvent extractors, and fiber analyzers, establishing the company as a supplier for quality control laboratories in the agriculture and food production industries.[3]
From 2010s: Automation and internationalization
In 2011, Velp Scientifica began manufacturing combustion elemental analyzers with the launch of the NDA 701, its first Dumas nitrogen/protein analyzer. The instrument employs the Dumas combustion method, which offers a faster and reagent-free alternative to the traditional Kjeldahl method.[4][5]
In 2013, the wholly-owned subsidiary Velp Scientific, Inc. was established to serve the North American market. In 2022, the U.S. subsidiary relocated to a larger facility in Deer Park, New York, equipped with dedicated laboratories and training spaces.[6]
IoT for laboratory products
In 2018, the company launched the Ermes Cloud Platform, enabling remote monitoring and control of connected laboratory instruments from any device. The loT platform operates in environments certified under ISO 27001 and SOC standards, with HTTPS-encrypted communications.[7][8]
In 2019, Velp China Co. Ltd. was incorporated in Shanghai. In 2025, Velp Scientific India Pvt. Ltd. was established in Navi Mumbai, extending the company's direct presence in the South Asian market.[6]
Patents
The company holds several patents in the field of laboratory instrumentation. In 1985, a patent was filed for a magnetic coupling system for laboratory stirrers, designed to ensure torque stability during operation.[9] In 1995, a patent was registered for a controlled steam flow distillation system (Italian Patent ITMI940663V0), employing a steam generator designed to operate without internal pressure.[10] In 2004, a patent was granted for a contactless agitator drive system (Italian Patent ITMI20040087U1), using an infrared sensor to detect test tubes and automatically initiate vibration.[11] In 2006, a patent was obtained for a titanium condenser for use in distillation and solvent extraction systems.[12]
Products
Velp Scientifica organizes its products into two lines: the Analytical Instrument Line, dedicated to the quantitative determination of elements and molecular compounds, and the Laboratory Equipment Line, covering general-purpose laboratory apparatus.[13]
Analytical Instrument Line
The analytical line includes instruments for elemental and compositional analysis across a range of matrices, for use in quality control, research and development, and regulatory compliance.[14][15]
- Elemental analyzers
- The EMA 502 is a micro-elemental analyzer for simultaneous CHNS-O determination, used in materials science, environmental studies, and pharmaceutical research.[15]
- The EMA 402XL is a macro elemental analyzer designed for larger, inhomogeneous samples, using crucible technology for CHNS analysis at higher temperatures.[14]
- The CN 802 is a combustion analyzer for carbon and nitrogen quantification, used in agricultural and environmental analysis.[4]
- The NDA 702 employs the Dumas combustion method for nitrogen and protein determination, with the option to use either helium or argon as carrier gas.[16][5]
- Kjeldahl systems
Despite the growth of combustion-based methods, the Kjeldahl method remains widely used in nitrogen determination. Velp manufactures equipment covering the complete Kjeldahl workflow: the DK and DKL series digestion units, and the UDK series distillation units (ranging from the UDK 129 to the UDK 169), with higher-tier models featuring automated titration and waste removal.[17]
- Extraction and oxidation stability
- The SER 158 is an automated solvent extractor using the Randall technique for fat and lipid determination.[17]
- The FIWE Advance performs determination of crude fiber, neutral detergent fiber (NDF), and acid detergent fiber (ADF), in compliance with AOAC and ISO methods.[2]
- The OXITEST reactor measures lipid oxidation stability directly on whole samples, without prior fat extraction, following AOCS Official Method Cd 12c-16. It is used in food, cosmetic, and petrochemical applications.[14]
Laboratory Equipment Line
The laboratory equipment line includes general-purpose instruments found in academic, industrial, and pharmaceutical settings.[18]
- Stirring and mixing
- Magnetic hotplate stirrers: the AREX series uses a ceramic-coated aluminium alloy top; the AREC series uses a white ceramic top for greater chemical resistance.[19]
- Overhead stirrers: the OHS series uses brushless motors and electronic speed control for high-viscosity fluids and large volumes.[20]
- Vortex mixers: the WIZARD model features a patented infrared sensor that initiates vibration automatically when a tube is detected.[19]
- Sample preparation and incubation
- The OV 625 and OV 725 are high-speed dispersers for homogenization in food, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical applications.[17]
- The ECODryBlock provides temperature-controlled incubation of test tubes and vials as an alternative to water baths.[14]
- The FOC and FTC cooled incubator series maintain stable temperatures from 3°C to 50°C for BOD testing and microbiological research.[21]
- Environmental testing
Certifications
The company holds certifications ISO 9001:2015 (quality management), ISO 14001:2015 (environmental management), and ISO 45001:2018 (occupational health and safety). All products carry the CE conformity marking for Europe and the CNEMKOus mark for the United States and Canada.[23] In sustainability, Velp has been awarded a Bronze Medal by EcoVadis, a rating covering environmental performance, labour and human rights, ethics, and sustainable procuremen.[23][24]
Presence in Scientific Literature
Instruments manufactured by Velp Scientifica are cited in peer-reviewed publications across several fields, including nitrogen and protein determination in food matrices,[25][26] elemental and fiber analysis in agricultural and environmental research, [27][28] and lipid oxidation stability testing.
