Warren Leming (born May 30, 1941) is an American actor, musician, director, and author. A prominent figure in Chicago's counterculture and "radical renaissance," he is best known as a founding member of the satirical rock band Wilderness Road and as a co-founder of the Nelson Algren Committee. His work often explores Chicago history, labor movements, and political satire.
Biography
Leming was born in Oak Park, Illinois, and raised in Forest Park. He attended Grant-White Elementary School and graduated from Proviso East High School in 1959. He pursued higher education at Roosevelt University (1961–1962) and Loop Junior College (1968–1969).
From 1962 to 1964, Leming served in the United States Army Signal Corps, stationed in Würzburg, Germany. This period contributed to his fluency in German, which later influenced his work with the Brechtian theatrical tradition.
Career
Music and Wilderness Road
In the late 1960s, Leming founded the Urban Renewal Boys, [1]
a bluegrass band, with Ray Tate at the Fickle Pickle coffee house. In 1968, he co-founded the rock band Wilderness Road with Nate Herman. The band was notable for its elaborate stage shows and political satire, often performing to raise funds for the Chicago Seven. They released two major-label albums:
- Wilderness Road (1972, Columbia Records)
- Sold for the Prevention of Disease Only (1973, Warner Reprise)
Theater and Film
Leming has been a significant figure in Chicago’s independent theater scene. In 1968, he was involved with the Free (Street?) Theater, and in 1984, he became a resident director at the Cross Currents Cabaret.
- Brechtian Influence: In 1983, he produced and directed "Brecht on Film," the first program of its kind with Chicago Filmmakers. In 1989, he translated and produced Bertolt Brecht’s Mahagonny with the Remains Theatre company.
- Collaborations: He founded the Post Rational Players at Cross Currents Cabaret, performing alongside improv pioneer Del Close.
- Documentary Work: He has directed and produced numerous documentary videos, often in collaboration with Denis Mueller or Kurt Jacobsen.
Writing and Activism
Leming is a noted chronicler of Chicago’s radical history. His book Cold Chicago: A Haymarket Fable (published by Charles H. Kerr) explores the Haymarket affair through a "cabaret-style" lens.
In 1989, Leming co-founded the Nelson Algren Committee alongside author Studs Terkel to preserve the legacy of writer Nelson Algren. His papers regarding Algren are held at Ohio State University.
Personal life
Leming was married to Eugenie Ross Leming from 1968 to 1979. In 1989, he married Laura Weathered. He lived abroad in London (1972) and spent significant time in both East and West Berlin between 1984 and 1989.
Awards and recognition
Chicago Advertising Council Award: For his Chicago Magazine cover illustration (1984). Critical Reception: Journalist Jeff Huebner of the Chicago Reader described Leming as "Chicago’s radical renaissance man" (1984).
