Yogesh Chandra is a Fijian poet and author. His literary work focuses on personal adversity and mental health advocacy. Originally from Nasekula Village in Labasa, Fiji, Chandra's trajectory as a published writer was shaped by utilizing poetry as a psychological coping mechanism and a form of personal therapy.[1]
Early life and academic background
Chandra's early life had financial hardship. At the age of ten, he lost his father to an accident.[1] To help support his household, Chandra worked casual jobs and sold gathered mangoes in nearby villages.[1] He funded his education through state welfare support and academic scholarships, eventually pursuing higher education at the University of the South Pacific, where he completed his undergraduate degree and postgraduate studies in forensic accounting.[1]
He began writing poetry at the age of 14 as an outlet to process grief and articulate his daily emotional experiences.[1]
Literary career and themes
Chandra's early career highlights the structural challenges faced by emerging writers in the Pacific region, particularly regarding securing capital, corporate sponsorship, and market visibility.[2] To overcome these hurdles, he sought editorial mentorship from USP academics and joined The Poetry Shop Fiji—a local writer's collective supported by the French Embassy and the Pacific Heritage Hub.[1]
His initial writing focused on hardship and grief, gradually expanding into psychological distress and the lived complexities of mental health conditions such as bipolar disorder.[3]
