YouTube as a learning tool refers to the use of the popular video-sharing platform YouTube as a means of education, both inside and outside the classroom. Since it was founded in 2005, YouTube has become one of the most widely used digital platforms in the world for sharing knowledge, building skills , and supporting academic study. Today more than 2.7 billion people use platform, and among its vast content library are university lectures, science lessons , language tutorials , and vocational training videos.
Educational institutions, independent creators, and nonprofit organizations have increasingly used YouTube as a part of formal teaching and self-directed learning. Well known educational channels such as Khan Academy , TED- Ed, and Crash Course have gathered millions of subscribers and helped make quality education available to people around the world. Studies have shown that student who use YouTube alongside traditional learning tend to perform better academically than those who rely only on conventional methods.
Despite its many benefits, YouTube also comes with challenges as an educational tool, including the risk of distraction, uneven content quality and the need for a stable internet connection.
History
YouTube was founded on February 14, 2005, by three former PayPal employees: Chad Hurley, Steve Chen and Jawed Karim. The first video uploaded to the platform was titled "Me at the zoo" and was posted by Karim on April 23 2005. Google purchased YouTube in October 2006 for approximately 1.65 billion dollars.
shortly after its launch, educational institution such as MIT and TED began uploading lectures and talks to the platform. In 2009, YouTube launched YouTube EDU, a decated section for educational content from universities and verified creators , formally recognizing the platform's role in education.
Educational Use- Formal education
In formal educational setting, teachers and university lectures have used YouTube videos as supplementary teaching materials . Videos are used to support classroom lessons, explain complex ideas through visual demonstrations, and give students access to expert knowledge. Research conducted at Middle East Technical University found that most students in an Academic Speaking Skills course benefited greatly from a YouTube channel created by their instructor.
Informal and Self-Directed Learning
Beyond formal education, YouTube has become a key resource for people who want to learn on their own. Users search the platform for tutorials on Academic subjects , practical skills and professional development. The platform is free and available on any device which making it especially useful for learners in areas with limited access to traditional education.
Language learning
YouTube has been particularly valuable for learning second language. The platform gives learners natural exposure to real language through videos,Vlogs and conversations. Learners often pause . rewind and use subtitles to better understand what they hear. A study of EFL students at the university of Baghdad found that YouTube helps students develop their language skills and encourages creativity and critical thinking.
Notable Educational channels

Benefits
Research has identified several important advantages to using YouTube as an Educational resources. First, the platform is completely free and accessible to anyone with an internet connection and regardless of where they live or their financial situation. Learners can also watch watch content their own pace, pausing and replaying the videos as many times as needed which makes it suitable for different learning styles and busy schedules.Additionally, video combines words, images, and sound at the same time, which helps learners understand and remember information more effectively. The platform covers virtually every academic subject, professional field and practical skill, making it useful for learners of all ages and backgrounds. Studies have also found that students who use YouTube alongside traditional classroom instructions tend to achieve better academic results. Finally, Comment sections allow learners to ask questions, share ideas, and learn from another beyond the classroom.
Limitations
Despite its many benefits, YouTube also presents several challenges as an educational platform. One of the most common issues is direction, as the platform continuously suggests other videos and making it easy for learners to move away from their intended study material. The quality of content on YouTube also varies greatly, and while many videos are accurate and well produced, others may contain incorrect of misleading information. Furthermore, using YouTube effectively depends on having a stable and fast internet connection, which is not always available in all regions. Unlike a traditional classroom, YouTube does not allow real time conversation between students and teachers, which can limit opportunities for personal feedback and support, Finally, without proper supervision, younger learners may come across inappropriate content through the platform's recommendation system.
