Zairoo: The Pan‑African Steampunk Fantasy is a tabletop role‑playing game created by Molombo Thillia Thillot III, whose work was the subject of a feature article in the Beijing Review.[1] The game is set in an alternate 20th century fantasy world inspired by African and Global Black Diaspora myths, where science, spirituality, and the supernatural intertwine.[2] It has been noted as the first Pan‑African steampunk fantasy setting.[3][4]

Setting

The world was torn apart when Keteku the Discordant ripped open reality, causing untold horrors to pour through the wound and plunging the land into a world‑rending war.[5] Players navigate a continent divided into five kingdoms: the Nkutu Enclave, the Maravi Isles, the Azala Sultanate, the Ilmoran Dominion, and the Enzi Mlimani.[3]

Factions and Characters

Instead of traditional character classes, Zairoo uses "Creeds" with African naming conventions, such as the shield‑bashing Fasimba and the healing Oloye.[2] Players also choose from twelve "Kin" (ancestral lineages) and over one hundred creatures drawn from African and Black mythology.[5]

Gameplay

The game uses a narrative‑driven d6 dice system with five main stats: Grit, Vision, Soul, Vibe, and Flow. It also features Harmony and Discord stats that measure a character's proximity to chaos.[5]

Reception

Zairoo received coverage from several gaming and culture outlets following its Kickstarter campaign. Bell of Lost Souls listed the game among notable crowdfunding projects in September 2025.[4] Wargamer highlighted the game's African naming conventions for its classes and its narrative‑driven d6 system.[5]

The game's announcement video was supported by Nyim Creatives.[6] The game was also acknowledged by PunkBlack Magazine, which shared the game's trailer and called attention to its Kickstarter campaign.[7]

Development

Zairoo was created by Congolese‑American creator Molombo Thillia Thillot III.[5] A Kickstarter campaign launched on August 29, 2025, reached its $30,000 funding goal within four days, and went on to raise over US$100,000 from more than 2,100 backers.[5][3] The Alpha PDF was released on June 24, 2026.[3]
