The area has been used for pastoral sheep and dairy farming since the 19th century.[2] It promotes itself on its rolling countryside, high rainfall and free-draining paddocks.[3]

Patoka School is a co-educational state primary school,[4] with a roll of 38 as of February 2024.[5][6]
