Character overview

Shapoklyak is depicted as an elderly woman dressed in outdated 19th-century attire, carrying a reticule handbag in which she keeps her pet rat, Lariska.[2] Her name is derived from the French chapeau claque, an obsolete collapsible opera hat, which serves as her signature headwear and carries a humorous connotation in Russian.

She is known for orchestrating pranks and mischief against local citizens. Her philosophy is encapsulated in the refrain of her theme song: "One won't ever get famous for good deeds" (Russian: Хорошими делами прославиться нельзя).[3] Despite her antagonistic role, she occasionally assists Gena the Crocodile and Cheburashka at the conclusion of various stories before reverting to her mischievous behavior in subsequent installments. In the 1983 animated film Cheburashka Goes to School, she admits to lacking a secondary education and enrolls in school alongside Cheburashka.
