Shinkows is a historic Chinese restaurant in Ooty, India[1].

History

Established in 1954, it began as a shoe shop run by Chinese immigrant Liao Shinkows, who came to Ooty from Guangdong via Kolkata in early 1900s[2]. After his father's death in 1964, his son, Liao Pao Chun, took over the business. The business evolved from broader services, from basic breakfast and tea to a focus on Chinese cuisine by the mid-1970s[3]. It is famous for its Chilli chicken often referenced by menu number #13A, American/Chinese chopsuey, fried rice and noodle variations, sweet and sour pork, and Chilli beef or pork[1].

As of July 2026, it remains a family-run establishment, with Powks and his wife, Linda, continuing to operate it daily. The restaurant is known for its authentic Hakka-style Chinese cuisine, prepared using local ingredients and house-made sauces[1].

Reception

The restaurant has long been a popular dining spot for boarding school students from Ooty and the surrounding areas[4].
