Background
Geiger stated that he only focused on creating a song that felt authentic to him when writing "String By", rather than approaching the song with specific expectations or strategy. He did not anticipate the song to achieve such widespread success.[1]
Composition
The song consists of steel guitar and is characterized by themes of heartbreak. It has been compared to the style of 1990s country. Lyrically, the song finds Geiger struggling to distance himself from a former lover who repeatedly draws him back into their relationship. Although they broke up and he knows she has been manipulating his emotions, he still has feelings for her. In the end, he begs her to find someone else and leave him alone.[2]
