I loved the "NSA" comment. There is some truth to that. It was not at all obvious that B-Lab was 501-C. Their PR told me on the phone (which of course I could not quote) but at first I could not easily make it out from their website and articles - it was almost hidden. I saw many written claims that paint a somewhat fuller and more linear picture than I wrote into this entry : 1) US IRS has been clamping down on granting nonprofit status at least since the early 00's; true or not, many organizations claim they fought for years to get it and failed. 2) This not only causes them to pay tax, which may or may not be important, but also denies the most traditional external certification of such orientation for the public good, which can be important for some businesses; 3) B Lab noticed there was an unserved market. 4)It was possible to do it as a real nonprofit (and the IRS agreed). 5) Some for-profit companies like it, incl. some backed by venture capital (e.g. CouchSurfing, which raised $25M or so) and will pay for certification. It might be possible to quote perhaps 20 more old sources that together support all of this but I did not expect to have to when I was reading them, so I did not include all of the above in the entry. There may be some NEW article that ties everything together more neatly. When I find this kind of thing I usually tip off a journalist to go in for an easy kill, but having written the WP stub it would have felt like WP generating its own sources.
