The Dirac string should be viewed as the line limit of the field of a solenoid. the only nontrivial scattering would come from deflection caused by interference from going around different sides of the solenoid, from the Aharanov Bohm effect. The dirac quantization condition guarantees that this interference phase is the same as in empty space. So the Dirac string doesn't scatter charges--- it is invisible. This is why you can take the limit of infinitesimal solenoid without anything blowing up.Likebox (talk) 10:10, 3 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Dirac String Observed?

[BBC News article] reporting the discovery of a magnetic monopole refers to the observation of a Dirac String (and in fact references this page). If this is correct then perhaps the bit about it being a "fictional" construct could be removed? Sawatts (talk) 07:46, 30 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

Yes, and in any case "fictitious" is entirely the wrong word in a scientific context to describe a hypothetical phenomenon. (Suspect ornate of the word arose from author not being able to think of the correct word or not understanding the meaning of the chosen word). Word changed to hypothetical.
