GPA calculation

I was hoping to find information about different ways a grade point average (GPA) is calculated. My child's school provides three different GPA numbers: "adjusted cumulative GPA," "cumulative GPA," and "weighted GPA." The school is a high-school (secondary school) located in the US, and typically uses a 4 point GPA scale and reports the number to four significant figures (X.XXX). However, the "weighted GPA" has a number higher than 4, so I think that calculation raises grades in advanced placement or honors courses by a point. All three numbers are different, but by less than two tenths. Maybe one of the cumulative numbers relates to classes that qualify for credit but were taken at another school, including middle-school credits or college classes taken during high-school, but I'm not sure.
