Talk:Juneteenth

The image and text about traditional African dance performed for Juneteenth, 2019 under the celebration and tradition tabs should be removed. As a Black American from Texas whose ancestors this holiday stems from, there has never been any African dance as part of our holiday. That is the commercialization that has happened after being made a federal holiday, this is not at all our tradition or celebration and this page should be factual and not spread false information in an attempt to blur and falsify our history. Our celebrations occurred in Texas, most other Black Americans had never heard of Juneteenth until it was made a federal holiday. Don't lie and say like everyone celebrated it or that it is a multicultural holiday, this is a blatant lie and an attempt to erase us Black American descendents of the enslaved people who established this celebration from our own history. I do not appreciate seeing lies like that which are harmful to our culture and history. ~2026-35252-81 (talk) 04:00, 16 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

Done I boldly removed it not because it's a "lie" but because it's a poor representation of celebrations of Juneteenth. EvergreenFir (talk) 05:35, 16 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

We need a better source than that. Slatersteven (talk) 13:30, 17 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

Last states to free all slaves.

In addition to the border states listed, New Jersey also had enslaved people until December of 1865. ~2026-35820-26 (talk) 12:00, 19 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

New Jersey is mentioned in the body of the article. New Jersey had adopted gradual abolition and outlawed the slave trade, so those 16 elderly individuals were under a different system, and the scale of the issue was different. No one seems to have written what happened to those 16 elderly people, when they technically became free. Alanscottwalker (talk) 13:41, 21 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
