Talk:Semperoper

Requested move

Semperoper is the usual German, Semper Oper is just wrong. Redirect should be the other way round.

  • Strongly Support You either have the name the opera company uses to markets itself (also to the English speaking public! - Semperoper is the proper name in English), or you have

a proper translation of the official name into English (which is Sächsiche Staatsoper Dresden, i.e. Saxon State Opera Dresden). The latter case means using a name that is never used - not very encyclopedic. Inventing a new translation such as Semper Opera is even worse.. DocendoDiscimus 01:39, 1 November 2005 (UTC)Reply

Discussion

Although Semper Oper is definitely not the correct title to use and Semperoper is acceptable, I think Semper Opera House is the ideal title for the English Wikipedia. Olessi 07:04, 31 October 2005 (UTC)Reply

"Semper Opera" is hardly an invented phrase, as indicated by Google. Dresden's English website refers to "Semper Opera House" (see also [1]). Tourist sites also use "Semper Opera House" (see [2]). As the company's website does not have an English version at the moment, I fail to see how it is is marketed in English as "Semperoper". Google is not the be-all-and-end-all for usage, but there are more hits for "Semper Opera" than "Semperoper". As I have already said, Semperoper is an acceptable title, but so is "Semper Opera (House)". Olessi 02:44, 1 November 2005 (UTC)Reply

Of course, Semper Opera too would have been fine by me (or indeed anything English, just not the wrong German). Weasel 21:25, 6 November 2005 (UTC)Reply

Question on Premieres

When listing operas that have premiered here, should the list only be operas that received their world premiere at the Semperoper? The European premiere of Dead Man Walking was performed here in May of this year, but I haven't added it to the list here because I didn't know if it should be included or not. There have also been other world premieres since it was rebuilt in 1985, but I need to read through their site and check up on that some more. Tnmusikherr 18:13, 31 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

What is the name?

It appears that the above discussion was never concluded. While the title of the article is indeed Semperoper, it only occurs in the article as the Semper Oper -- a name which is wrong in all cases. I'm going to change each occurance to simply Semperoper. The name of it is not changed on any other language wiki, therefore there is no reason why it should be changed on the English page.

Replica Building

This building should be listed under a new category for replica buildings. See Talk:St Mark's Campanile Robert Schediwy (Vienna) 84.112.54.160 (talk) 14:42, 7 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

First built in 1841

This gives the impression that what happened after the 1869 fire was a mere reconstruction. In fact, the first Senperoper looked very different from what can be seen now, see the pics here. Yaan (talk) 16:52, 18 September 2008 (UTC)Reply
