Quick return mechanism
The design I've seen in the David Gingery "The Metal Shaper" book ( https://gingerybookstore.com/MetalShaper.html) called the quick return mechanism a Scotch Yoke, but pivots around a bearing in-line with the slot, rather than sliding perpendicular to the slot. The video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jx5nOn0tf_k mathes the Gingery book and calls it a Whitworth Quick Return mechanism a pretty good video of the operation on a real machine.

- It's a Whitworth, never a Scotch Yoke. Kinematically they're quite similar, but the Whitworth is pivoted at the bottom, rather than the Scotch Yoke's linear bearing. This also has the effect of varying the lever ratio, so that you get the quick return action. Andy Dingley (talk) 00:11, 31 March 2025 (UTC)
