Ribatejo comes directly from riba and Tejo, where riba means "bank, shore" (latin ripa), other derivated words are ribeira (<riparia). For instance, in Asturias (Spain) you have the village Ribadesella, literally "shore of the Sella (river)". This seems to be copied from the Galician and Mirandese Wikipedias. They just happen to include the words Río and Riu, which mean "river", in the article names.
