Talk:Wellhead

Yet another oilfield article

i was very thankful for this page because i am doing a holiday puzzle for bonus points at school and the clue was "special pipings and gate valves installed on a drilling rig above ground"...i had no clus what that was and this page gave me the answer! (christmas tree)...by the way, i wasn't cheating-we're allowed to use "resources"...thanks! p.s. theres no need for anything to be deleted or added if you ask me...it helped me just fine...

It's like a whole wiki-oilfield. Uriah923 03:44, 18 November 2005 (UTC)Reply

C'mon Dude - if you are going to write technical stuff, why not read and reference industrial standards, specifications, codes or other professional documents and get it right instead of "having a go at it".

This page had a number of incorrect statements and naive comments which should be corrected or enhanced before merging with wellhead or other articles.

Examples include: "a christmas tree (or "Wellhead" as it is properly called)" is not correct in that a christmas tree IS NOT a "wellhead" They are completely separate pieces of equipment. In fact a wellhead must be present in order to to utilize a christmas tree and a wellhead is used WITHOUT a christmas tree during drilling operations.

"... of valves, spools and fittings for an oil well," is not correct in that it is also used on oil, gas, water injection, water disposal, gas injection, condensate and other types of wells.

Although not strictly incorrect because items are discussed further into the article, the "function" of a tree is written poorly (using the term "both" and then listing three items). A christmas tree provides numerous additional functions including chemical injection points, well intervention means, pressure relief means (eg annulus vent), tree and well monitoring points (such as pressure, temperature, corrosion, erosion, sand detection, flow rate, flow composition, valve and choke position feedback, connection points for devices such as down hole pressure and temperature transducer (DHPT), etc.

Very few, if any, wells and christmas tree allow flow directly to a refinery. The produced fluids usually require clean up before putting into a pipeline or refinery. After processing near the well, the production is conveyed to a depot or other storage facility before refining.

Injection of chemicals is USUALLY used to PREVENT not solve problems. Once a problem occurs, it may be too late to be able to get chemicals to the blockage.

And finally, a tree NEVER controls the downhole safety valve. The CONTROL SYSTEM attached to the tree controls the valve wile the tree acts as an attachment and conduit means of the control system to the downhole safety valve (scssv, dhsv, sssv, etc). Well there's no point getting excited about it. Fix it if you see problems. TastyCakes (talk) 18:35, 28 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

I am doing some work on this page. There are big differences between a wellhead and xmas tree, so we should keep them seperate, but highly cross referenced. andyminicooper —Preceding unsigned comment added by Andyminicooper (talkcontribs) 22:06, 25 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

C'mon, please be careful

Is it not incredibly obvious that "Christmas Tree" redirects to the famed seasonal conifer, and not to the piece of drilling equipment? I fixed it on this page but there may still be problems around the site.66.134.4.226 (talk) 20:24, 8 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
