Talk:Yb

YbYBYB – Nearly everything here can be referred to as "YB." ~2026-40137-19 (talk) 21:01, 16 July 2026 (UTC) — Relisting. In solidarity, Gommeh (talk 🎮 sign) 17:41, 23 July 2026 (UTC) — Relisting. –Maltazarianparleyinvestigate 11:46, 1 August 2026 (UTC) — Relisting. Axolitl (talk | contribs) 05:40, 9 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

  • Support per nom. At a minimum, I count 8 YB's and 4 Yb's. Several of these are either not in English or are otherwise non-standard, so it's a little unclear how these would be abbreviated, but even if I'm wrong about a couple of these, the YB's are still in the majority. —Myceteae🍄‍🟫 (talk) 02:04, 21 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
  • Comment: If I understand correctly, we're supposed to prefer formatting as words over abbreviations, and we do have one entry that is not an abbreviation – Yb, Russia. — BarrelProof (talk) 16:35, 21 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
This true, at least in part. WP:DABNAME lists several principles that should be considered in selecting the name. The first is A word is preferred to an abbreviation and the last is The spelling that reflects the majority of items on the page is preferred to less common alternatives. The second bullet is When no word can be formed, all capitals is preferred. If a word can be formed, but the majority of entries are all caps, what then? One read is that two out of three of these criteria prefer Yb, if we accept that "Yb" as in Yb, Russia is a "word". But to select the title based on just one of the 12 entries seems at odds with the overall approach. —Myceteae🍄‍🟫 (talk) 16:58, 21 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
    Capitalization is not spelling. — BarrelProof (talk) 00:45, 24 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
I mean, sure. Still, it seems odd to select a title that doesn't match the styling of a supermajority of entries, and especially for just one entry out of 12 to drive the entire decision. —Myceteae🍄‍🟫 (talk) 01:05, 24 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
The village name is the result of a transliteration from Russian, and isn't an obvious word in English, so it probably makes more sense to split it off. It could actually make sense to format the list as "YB", and place a link to the village in a hatnote. --Joy (talk) 22:29, 1 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

  • Neutral. This page does what a DAB page is supposed to do: help readers find the article they are looking for. It makes no difference whatsoever if the title Is YB or Yb. Why change it?
I add that to anyone who's studied science at degree or quite possibly high school level, Yb immediately means ytterbium, an element in the less fashionable part of the periodix table. Narky Blert (talk) 18:46, 2 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
I suppose that means that there is no WP:PRIMARYTOPIC for Yb, since two clearly notable topics use that form. — BarrelProof (talk) 22:22, 2 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
The current discussion is about the title of this page. The question of whether there is or is not a PTOPIC for either YB or Yb is a different one. (For the record, I oppose any idea that there might be in the strongest possible terms.) Narky Blert (talk) 15:32, 4 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
  • Leaning oppose, given Yb, Russia, ytterbium, and yottabit. They may be somewhat obscure, but so are all the YB subjects. I would expect that the closest thing to a primary topic would be the symbol for the chemical element. BD2412 T 03:14, 3 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
  • Weak oppose. Pageviews show the YB topics to be more popular, but most are WP:RECENT and it's unclear how often they are referred to as "YB". The Yb topics seem more encyclopedic and are commonly written as Yb. As long as YB and Yb both lead here, the title doesn't much matter. If in doubt, it's less disruptive and less effort to do nothing. Certes (talk) 09:21, 3 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
