The dates for George Brown are questionable as although he was deputy leader of the Labour Party until 1970 he resigned from the cabinet and all government office on 15 March 1968 following a dispute with Harold Wilson. Thus he did not have any role in Wilson's government between that date and its losing office (and Brown losing his seat in Parliament) at the 1970 general election. Arguably Barbara Castle as First Secretary of State was the senior figure in the government after the Prime Minister.
