Since 2017, he has been a cast member of the YouTube sketch comedy-improv collective Smosh.
Early life
Damien Christian Haas was born on November 23, 1990 in Fulda, Germany while his family was stationed at a US military base[1][2][3] His father, Ronald Haas, was an Army Reserve intelligence officer[3] of German descent, while is mother Marilyn is of Italian descent.[4] His father passed away in 2010.[5][6][4] Haas has an older sister, Annemarie (born 1982),[3] as well as an older step-sister, beauty YouTuber Brittany Vasseur.[7]
Haas' family moved to Peachtree City, Georgia from Germany when he was three, where he spent the rest of his childhood.[2] He credits his mother for developing his love of acting during this period.[4] When he was 16, she began homeschooling Haas so he could focus on his acting career.[8]
Career
Haas began acting at a young age, performing in several stage plays including as Willy Wonka in Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory[2][9] and Louden Downey in A Few Good Men.[10] In 2000, he joined the Atlanta Workshop Players theater troupe[8] and in 2004 he began training in improvisational acting.[11] He also started voice acting as a child, being featured on an educational CD-ROM.[12] He booked his first film role in 2009, starring in the short film The Hero Complex.[2] In 2010, Haas moved to Los Angeles to attend the University of Southern California[4] where he also directed the university's Commedus Interruptus improv theater troupe.[12]
In 2011, Haas booked his breakout role as the recurring character Damien Johanssen in the Disney Channel show So Random!, where he performed alongside fellow future Smosh member Shayne Topp.[13][14][15][16] He subsequently dropped out of university for the role.[4] The show was cancelled after one season, and Haas pivoted to focus on voice acting.[4][16] He booked his first video game role in 2013, providing additional voices for Grand Theft Auto V.[12] Since then, Haas has performed in a number of video games including Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes[16][17] and Starfield, anime series such as Delicious in Dungeon and My Happy Marriage,[13][18][19][16] and films including the English-language version of the current highest grossing animated film Ne Zha 2.[18][20]
Following the end of So Random!, Haas and Topp became roommates, with Topp joining Smosh in 2015. At the recommendation of Topp, Haas successfully auditioned for Smosh.[4] He first appeared on the sub-channel Smosh Games in 2017, and later joined the main cast.[13][16][21] In February 2020, he went on tour with Smosh, performing several live improv shows.[22]
In 2017, Haas began streaming on Twitch.[19] As of 2025, he has 192,000 followers.[23] He has been sponsored by Alienware since 2021.[24]
Since 2023, Haas has been professionally involved in the tabletop role-playing game community, including acting as a game master for the Smosh series Sword AF,[25] performing live actual play at fan conventions,[26][27] and being hired by Wizard of the Coast to perform actual play of new Dungeons & Dragons expansion books.[28]
In 2025, he had a guest performance in Dungeons & Dragons: The Twenty-Sided Tavern during its national tour leg in Chicago.[29]
Personal life
Haas has been diagnosed with Autism, ADHD, and OCD.[4][30] He does not drink alcohol.[4][11]
Haas identifies as demisexual.[31]
Haas has organized fundraisers for several charities, including St. Jude Children's Research Hospital[32], the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles[33], and the LA Wildfire Relief Fund.[34] Through Smosh he has also participated in fundraisers for Stand Up to Cancer[35][36] and Creators for Palestine.[37][38][39] He has been a vocal critic of the use of artificial intelligence to replicate actors' voices[40][41][17] and dub media in different languages, including advocating for a boycott of Amazon.[42]
Haas credits his sister Annemarie with encouraging his love of anime at a young age.[2][43]
