Civilizations and leaders
There are 18 civilizations available in the standard retail version of Civilization VI. The player chooses a civilization and assumes the role of its leader, based on prominent historical figures. Each leader of a civilization has a unique unit, unique infrastructure (which could be built into a building, district or improvement), leader bonus, special ability and historical agenda.
In addition of 18 Civilizations in standard retail version, additional civilizations are available as downloadable content (DLC) including Montezuma of the Aztecs, Jadwiga of Poland, John Curtin of Australia, Cyrus of Persia, Alexander of Macedonia, Amanitore of Nubia, Jayavarman VII of Khmer and Gitarja of Indonesia.
In the Rise and Fall expansion pack includes eight new playable civilizations and nine new playable leaders including Korea under Seondeok, Netherlands under Wilhelmina, Mongolia under Genghis Khan, India under Chandragupta, Cree under Poundmaker, Georgia under Tamar, Mapuche under Lautaro and Zulu under Shaka.
In the Gathering Storm expansion pack includes eight new playable civilizations and nine new playable leaders including Hungary under Matthias Corvinus, Māori under Kupe, Canada under Wilfrid Laurier, Inca under Pachacuti, Mali under Mansa Musa, Sweden under Kristina, Ottomans under Suleiman and Phoenicia under Dido. For the first time in Civilization game series history, Eleanor of Aquitaine makes her as unique playable leader to represent two civilizations under England and France, depend on how civilization would play.
Additional playable civilizations unveil in New Frontier Pass DLC content. Those playable leaders are Simón Bolívar of Gran Colombia, Lady Six Sky of Maya, Menelik II of Ethiopia, Basil II of Byzantium, Ambiorix of Gaul, Hammurabi of Babylon, Bà Triệu of Vietnam and João III of Portugal. Additionally, Kublai Khan makes him a unique playable leader to represent between China and Mongolia.
