Wikipedia User: BigDuke6 is the nom de plume for Peter Duke. Peter finds a particular affinity to the name, as it refers to the "Lieutenant Colonel Bill Kilgore" character, played by Robert Duvall in the 1979 feature film Apocalypse Now.
The name is a reference to the United States Army name assignments to various helicopters in an assault formation. "Dukes" refer to gunships, and the command position in an assault formation is the sixth helicopter in the formation. '6' is also a reference to the battalion command element, of which Col. Kilgore is. the '6' call sign is designated in all signal/communications operations procedures for battalion and brigade level commanders. "Big Duke" as it is used in the film and may be an obtuse reference to John Wayne, aka "The Duke".
