The Southeastern Institute of Research (SIR) is a marketing research firm based in Richmond, Virginia. SIR specializes in providing both qualitative and quantitative research techniques, aiding clients in identifying and seizing marketing opportunities, testing new products and services, launching new initiatives, and tracking the overall effectiveness of their marketing programs. In recent years, SIR has developed a strong client base in the fields of transportation, healthcare, and generational dynamics.[1] SIR serves as the research-branch of the Boomer Project, also based in Richmond.
History
The current incarnation SIR was formed in 1964 by Richard Steele and Bob Miller. Under their leadership, Steele and Miller established SIR as a leading figure in the field of product testing, customer surveys, and strategic planning. During their tenure. SIR's research played a crucial role in the development of the Virginia is for Lovers ad campaign, signage for the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel, and the world's first bank-issued credit card.[2] In 2003, coinciding with the announcement of Miller's retirement, SIR was purchased by current owner/CEO John Martin, who assumed leadership within the year.[3]

SIR's research has driven a number of notable projects over the years, including:
- The first stay-on-tab for canned drinks[4]
- The first automatic teller machine[5]
- The first "brown-in-bag" oven bag[6]
- The first cutting bar on aluminum foil boxes[7]
