Kevin G. Karpiak, PhD

Dr. Kevin Karpiak is a cultural anthropologist and criminologist whose work focuses on policing. He teaches at Eastern Michigan University.


Biography

Kevin Karpiak is Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology, Anthropology and Criminology at Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti, Michigan[1]. His ethnographic work explores the practical nature of ethics in French police administration from an anthropological perspective, a topic on which he has published widely[2]. He has also served as Editor for several projects, including the group academic blog Anthropoliteia.net[3] and, most recently, as co-editor of the series Police/Worlds: Studies in security, crime and governance for Cornell University Press[4].

Notable Accomplishments

  • On Sunday, October 5, 2014 his chapter "Adjusting La Police[5]" was used as a foundational citation for the Dictionary.com Word of the Day, which was "tutoyer"[6].
