2008 Red Square demonstration took place at noon, at the Lobnoe Mesto, Moscow. 7 protesters opened wide banner with slogan FOR YOUR FREEDOM AND OURS (ЗА ВАШУ И НАШУ СВОБОДУ) [1]. Few minutes later, the police appeared; Police officers had detained some of protesters and spectators and tried to destroy all the records of the event.

Historic context

The demonstration refers to the events of y.1968, when soviet troops occupied Szechoslovakia, and 7 russian patriots saved the honesty of the Russian nation, expressing their protest against the aggression. [2][3]. 40 years later, especially, during the war in South Ossetia, the inconsistency of notices in the official media of mass information caused the impression that the customs of the USSR come back [4][5]. In order to express their feeling, the protesters organized the demonstration.

Blogs and newspapers indicate names of 7 participants of the demonstration:

At noon, they opened the wide banner FOR YOUR FREEDOM AND OURS (ЗА ВАШУ И НАШУ СВОБОДУ) and begun to cry this slogan. [6]. During few minutes, they could explain their civil position to the spectators, distributing their declaration and answering questions. Basic points of protesters included the following [7]:

  • Again, in the county, the political prisoners appear
  • Elections were not prudent.
  • The love to the Fatherland is substituted with love to leaders.
  • 1968, August 25, the Freedom was born, but even now, after 40 years, this freedom still suppressed and therefore, their slogan is still important: it is still dangerous, to express own opinion, and even blogs are prosecuted.

One police officer approached the protesters and ordered them to go somewhere from this place. Protesters agreed and walked along the Red square . The police officer gone with them. Then his colleagues joined him. Protesters left the banner to the police officers and left. Three of them were detended: Dmitroshkin, Zborenki and Ninenko. Also several spectators, making photo pictures and video records, were detended. The police officers destroyed the pictures and video records; one camera was reported to be broken by the police. Among the detended spectators, there were 4 journalists:

Милиционеры, проводившие задержание, отказались назвать свои имена. The detended persons were delivered to the police office Kitaj-gorid («Китай-город»). At 12:20, the journalists were released except Kostuchenko. Kostuchenko, who insisted that the police officers make the protocol indicating that they had broken her camera. The police officer major Selishev (Селищев) come to deal with detended persons. The actions of detended persons are qualified as «violation of rules of public events» (article 20.2 of «КоАП РФ», «нарушение правил проведения публичных мероприятий»).
