THE AUTHOR. Dr. theol, Assessor d.L. Otto Scheib was born in Cologne in 1937, and studied Catholic Theology, German and then History at the universities of Bonn, Freiburg and Tübingen. From 1969 to 1975 he was the research assistant of Prof. Dr. August Franzen (+1972) in the Department of Church History at the University of Freiburg, and from 1975 to 1977 Stipendiat der Herzog-August-Bibliothek Wolfenbüttel. After ordination he was from 1978 to 2002 a parish priest in the South Baden area of the Archbishopric of Freiburg, and also continued scholarly work. Since retirement in 2002, he has worked increasingly on studies of diocesan, monastic and intellectual history.
