Overview
The Evansville Transit Authority was formed in 2003 by Kyle Chadburn, Travis LeBlanc, and brothers Adam & Josh Choiniere. The band has recorded several albums of cover songs and original material and plans to create another album in the near future. The band's roots are influenced by the legendary Northeast Kingdom musicians of the past such as guitarists Harry Blake, Gordy Chadburn, and Dwight Dudley, master percussionists Norman LeBlanc and John Choiniere, and of course the magnificent and world famous Broadway dancer Freddie "Twinkle Toes" Poutre. Through various line-up changes, bassists Gordy Chadburn, Chip Sanville, and Chris Doncaster, as well as drummer Jesse Potter have also performed with the group.
Biogrpahy
The band started as a result of a series of jam sessions in the luxurious Lake Region Union High School band room. Knowing that there was an obvious chemistry between them, they could see that not only was there a distinct connection happening, but the beginning of a new musical era was taking shape. It would prove to be an era that would produce some of the most innovative and ambitious music in the history of rock and roll.
"We created a whole new genre of music" says guitarist Kyle Chadburn. "We like to think that we were the first real pioneers in the style that has come to be known as 'Klang rock.'"
"It's kind of a cross between traditional country, classic rock 'n roll and a funky backbeat that would suit some brand of hillbilly redneck pornos quite well," said guitarist Adam Choiniere when asked about the group's groundbreaking style.
Although the boys were the first innovators of this amazingly creative and immensely brilliant genre, they are not afraid to admit that they should not be credited as its creators.
"We owe much of our great success to the real founding fathers of Klang Rock, the Klang Brothers themselves" stated drummer Travis LeBlanc. "If it wasn't for geniuses like the great Dwight Dudley, who revolutionized the role of rhythm guitarist, or Jose Choiniere, who inspired all of us to play more than one instrument at the same time using any part of the body necessary, we wouldn't be the talented band that you hear today."
Orleans music afficianado Peter Gage remarks, "The Klang Brothers, and more recently ETA, are the reason I love music. Their playing is so transcendental and emotional that I often find myself weeping when I hear it. It really connects me to my deepest feelings and I cannot find that type of connection anywhere but in Klang Rock."
Although the Klang Brothers never performed together as a whole, they did provide the majority of members for a number of great bands. The most solid line-up of classic Klang musicians performed under the band name "Pentagon", a group that featured guitarist Roland Tougas, bassists Mark Trottier and Gary Matthews, drummer Jeff Vos, keyboardist Tom French, and of course the undeniable brilliance of trumpeter/pianist/violinist Jimmy "Jose" Choiniere. The Pentagon, and their ever expanding series of guest musicians, directly led to the tradition that ETA carries on now.
Drummer Josh Choiniere comments, "We always try to involve as many people as we can in our performances. It's our way of spreading the badassness of our music to the hearts and souls of those who might never have experienced it otherwise. It's like a big musical orgy without any mess to clean up after!"
The Klang Brothers, who now perform their bewildering talents only once a year, gather every Labor Day at the Choiniere family camp to inspire this generation's musicians and to throw a hell of a party. These parties are the root of ETA's original material, which deals with drinking, sex, and wild behavior, and comes from the experiences they had at these parties.
"I'll never forget the first time I heard ETA perform Nellie Cartwright," says long time fan and follower Norman LeBlanc. "It really took me back to the good ol' days when songs really meant something. Not like today when it's all 'sex this' and 'drugs that'. It almost makes me sick to hear it! But then I put on a classic ETA record and I'm right back where I belong. They've single-handedly renewed my faith in popular music."
After learning the skilled art of Klang Rock and transforming it to suit their band perfectly, the boys began to jam at the local Post #23 American Legion in beautiful, downtown Orleans. Soon after their jamming began, they started to attract audiences from all walks of life, even celebrities! One such guest to their sessions was famed dancer, and Broadway star, Freddie "Twist and Twirl" Poutre. What an experience! The Legion would provide a breeding ground for artistic expansion as the band came into its own. Their rehearsals, a great number of gigs, and even some recording sessions took place there, and there's no telling when they'll stop by to rock the joint once again.
ETA has since gone on to book various gigs around Vermont and has become one of the leading local rock bands, allowing people from all over to experience what ETA is all about. Despite various line-up changes through 2005, 2006, and 2007, during which time bassists Gordon Chadburn and Chris Doncaster rotated membership and Travis moved from drums to guitar and then back to drums again, the core ideals and goals of the band remained. After again solidifying their line-up in 2008, they set out on their first major tour, entitled "ETA's Hotpants and Poutine Renegade Romp of 2008." The tour was a huge success and the band was featured at all the major hotspots for multi-night performances. With 2009 comes another year of music for the members of ETA. Although no major tour plans have been announced, many performances are likely and possibly even a new record!
The musicians of ETA are continuously expanding their musical talents. Kyle released his first solo project in 2005, and another in 2007 and the band has also recorded with side projects like The Firing Line (with Kyle on guitar, Josh on drums, and Chris on bass), Apex (with Kyle & Adam on guitars, Chris on bass, and Jesse Potter on drums), and Travis's work with his former group 91 North (featuring Dan Before on guitar and Chip Sanville on bass), but ETA remains each member's main focus and their catalog of material continues to expand everyday.
