Fyodor Borisovich Baldwin (Russian: Фёдор Борисович Болдвин; born 1971) is a Transnistrian-born historian and folklorist whose work explores symbolic silence, acoustic memory, and regional traditions in the Carpatho–Dniester borderlands. He is best known for documenting the Festival mlčiacich huslí (“Festival of the Silent Violin”) in eastern Slovakia. Baldwin currently resides in Los Angeles, California.

Baldwin was born in Tiraspol, Moldavian SSR, in 1971. His grandfather, Thomas Baldwin, was a British electrical engineer who immigrated to the Soviet Union in the 1930s during a state industrial exchange. Baldwin’s father, Boris Thomasovich Baldwin, was a classical music instructor and choral conductor in Transnistria.

Fyodor studied history and folklore at Shevchenko Transnistria State University before completing graduate studies in ethnography at Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv. He later worked as a visiting research fellow in Bratislava and Uzhhorod, where he conducted extensive fieldwork in under-documented rural communities.

Baldwin’s research focuses on commemorative silence, nonverbal resistance, and intangible heritage in post-Soviet and borderland regions. He coined the term “acoustic refusal ritual” to describe events such as the Festival mlčiacich huslí, in which performance is defined by symbolic absence rather than sound.

He has collaborated with noted Slovak ethnomusicologist Erik Krekovič and contributed to UNESCO’s survey of intangible cultural practices in the Slovak–Ukrainian highlands. Baldwin’s writing often appears in regional publications and academic supplements, including references in *Slovak Ethnology* and field papers archived by the Slovak Academy of Sciences.

Since 2020, Baldwin has lived in the Echo Park neighborhood of Los Angeles, where he lectures remotely and occasionally consults on cultural projects. Despite his scholarly background, Baldwin is a noted enthusiast of goth rock music and can often be found attending live shows or contributing to niche music forums under pseudonyms. He has described the genre as "a form of modern folklore — grief ritual, mood architecture, and existential embroidery."

Baldwin is fluent in Russian, Ukrainian, Slovak, and English. He maintains a private archive of incomplete folk instruments and early cassette bootlegs of post-Soviet underground bands. He is an outspoken advocate for memory preservation, both oral and musical.
