Running (the act of running, as in pumping one's arms and legs at the same time): Running is a sport, a sport that many people love and that many people hate. In order to be a distance runner, you have to have lots of stamina or endurance. To be a sprinter, you have to put forth tons of energy in order to catapult yourself to the finish. Instead of being called running, however, it is called Cross Country (abbrev., XC, which is in the fall) and Track and Field (which is in the spring). Cross Country is not in the Olympics because people eventually began to think that it was too hot to participate in in the summer. Track and Field is in the Olympics however. Cross Country: Cross Country is running on different terrains, such as gravel, cement, pavement, grass, and more. Track and Field: The track part of Track and Field is obviously run on a track. The field part is played in a field. Discus, Javelin, High Jump, and more are included in field. 3200m (2 mi), 1600m (1 mi), 800m (1/2 mi), 400m (1/4 mi), 200m (1/8 mi), 100m (1/16 mi) are just a few of the events in track. These are the events in Track and Field in the summer Olympics: Men's: 10,000 m, 100m, 110m Hurdles, 1500m, 200m, 20k Race Walk, 3000m Steeplechase, 400m Hurdles, 400m, 4x100m Relay, 4x400m Relay, 5000m, 50k Race Walk, 800m, Decathlon, Discus Throw, Hammer Throw, High Jump, Javelin Throw, Long Jump, Marathon, Pole Vault, Shot Put, Triple Jump Women's: 10,000m, 100m Hurdles, 100m, 1500m, 200m, 20k Race Walk, 3000m Steeplechase, 400m Hurdles, 400m, 4x100m Relay, 4x400m Relay, 5000m, 800m, Discus Throw, Hammer Throw, Heptathlon, High Jump, Javelin Throw, Long Jump, Marathon, Pole Vault, Shot Put, Triple Jump
