Freerider (also Free Rider) is a 3,300-foot (1,000 m) big wall route on El Capitan in Yosemite National Park. Originally climbed as an easier variation of the Salathé Wall, the route was established in 1995 and saw its first free ascent in 1998 by Thomas and Alexander Huber.[1] Freerider is considered the easiest "true" free route on El Capitan, making it a popular choice for first-time big wall climbers, speed records, and notable first ascents.[2] In present day, Freerider is arguably most well-known from the Academy Award-winning documentary Free Solo, which documents the first ever free solo of El Capitan by American climber Alex Honnold.

Freeblast Slab
The Freeblast Slab, or Freeblast, comprises the first 8 to 11 pitches of Freerider and the Salathé Wall and is often considered a classic standalone Yosemite climb. Most pitches are rated between 5.10 and 5.11 and require difficult friction climbing on extremely small, often slippery holds.
Monster Offwidth
The Monster Offwidth is a roughly 200-foot (61 m) long offwidth crack that deviates near pitch 19 of the original Salathé Wall route.
Teflon Corner
The Teflon Corner is an insecure, notoriously smooth dihedral pitch that is given a rating of 5.12d. Roughly correspods with pitch 25[3]
Enduro Corner
The Enduro Corner is a two-pitch dihedral section of the route corresponding with pitches 29 and 30.
Boulder Problem
The Boulder Problem is the name given to a difficult 17-move section of pitch 22 that corresponds in difficulty to a V7 boulder problem.[4] The difficulty of this section was heavily featured in the documentary Free Solo in the context of Alex Honnold's choice to climb this section instead of the Enduro Corner during his free solo of El Capitan.
Records and Notable Ascents
- "Flashed" in team redpoint style by Mark Anderson and Mike something. They had already climbed salathe wall, which has significant overlap, and they alternated leading instead of both climbers leading every pitch which was accepted at the time (May 2004). [5]
- Pete Whittaker arguably flashed it in 2014, but not technically. [6]
- November 2016, Pete also became the first person to rope-solo el cap in under 24 hours, breaking the previous record of four days. Did this via freerider [7][8]
- First female free ascent in 2004 by steph davis [9]
- Barbara "Babsi" Zangerl becomes first person to flash the el capitan on freerider [10]
- Free solo'd by Alex honnold in 2017 [11]
