Early life and education

Jonathan Bentley Singer was born on August 11, 1970, in Bloomington, Indiana. He earned a B.A. in Human Development with honors from Earlham College (1992), and studied advanced jazz performance at the Conservatoire National de Région in Lyon, France (1993). He received his M.S.S. W. from the University of Texas at Austin in 1996 and earned a Ph.D. in Social Work from the University of Pittsburgh in 2009.[1]

Career

Singer began his professional practice as a bilingual (English–Spanish) clinical social worker in Austin, Texas, providing crisis services and family therapy from 1996 to 2004. From 2002–2004, he served as adjunct faculty at UT‑Austin's School of Social Work. In 2008, he joined the faculty of Temple University's School of Social Work. In 2015, he joined Loyola University Chicago’s School of Social Work as an associate professor, becoming a full professor in 2022. [2][3]

Suicide prevention, scholarship & social work design

  • Served as Secretary (2017) then President of the American Association of Suicidology (AAS), before stepping into notable roles including responding to the COVID‑19 shift to a virtual AAS conference (earning MeetingsNet Changemaker Award). [4]
  • Co‑author of Suicide in Schools: A Practitioner’s Guide to Multi‑level Prevention, Assessment, Intervention, and Postvention (first edition 2015; second edition 2024).
  • Authored over 100 publications, with research featured in NPR, BBC, Fox, Time Magazine, The Guardian, and The New York Times. His co-authored article on media reporting of celebrity suicides won the 2019 Sigma Delta Chi journalism award.[5]

Contributions to technology and public engagement

Founder/host of the Social Work Podcast (launched 2007), which has published more than 145 episodes, amassed over 8 million downloads, and reached listeners in over 200 countries. Recognized as the first podcast by and for social workers.[6]

A pioneer in integrating technology into social work, Singer co‑led the Social Work Grand Challenge “Harness Technology for Social Good”, was a founding member of the suicide prevention social media community #SPSM, and served as past treasurer for the human services Information Technology Association (husITa). He also served on the Council on Social Work Education’s first Technology Advisory Group.

Advisory board member JED Foundation[7], Suicide Prevention Resource Center, and the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.[8] Healio Psychiatry Peer Perspective Board member, NASW Expert. Former chair of NASW's Child, Adolescent and Young Adult (CAYA) Specialty Practice Section. Former member and chair of Council on Social Work Education's Council on Publications.

Personal life

Singer resides in Evanston, Illinois, with his wife and three children.
