Obituary

Randy Venerando Campo, 1952-1992

Ophthalmology has lost a great clinician and leader in the untimely death of Randy V. Campo, MD, of Scottsdale, Ariz. He died in an automobile accident at age 40 years, on September 19,1992.

Randy is survived by his 2 children, Matthew and Jessica Campo, Cathy, the mother of his children, his mother Rita Battaglia, a sister Jeanne and niece & nephew Jamin & Melissa Potamkin.

Randy was born in Philadelphia, Pa, and received his Bachelor of Science degree on graduation from Pennsylvania State University. He pursued his medical studies in Philadelphia, graduating from Thomas Jefferson Medical College in 1977. He completed his residency in ophthalmology at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami, Fla. Randy completed a fellowship in vitreoretinal surgery at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee in 1982. There he trained with Tom Aaberg, MD, Gary Abrams, MD, Trex Topping, MD, Frederick Reeser, MD, and Greg Brinton, MD. While serving his residency at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, Randy was universally recognized as one of its leading scholars. An in-house bon mot went like this, "If the senior resident doesn't know the answer to a question, ask the chief resident. If the chief resident doesn't know, ask the clinical faculty. If the clinical faculty doesn't know, ask Randy Campo!"

Citing the humility of his parents as one of his own assets in his interview letter to the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, he comported himself similarly throughout his clinical career. Randy's vast fund of knowledge of ophthalmology, especially in the area of vitreoretinal disorders and surgery, was always accessible. In honor of his memory, his colleagues in a retina study group have retitled their organization as the Campo Society. In addition, a special lec tureship fund has been established at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute to support a series of visiting professorships. Contribution to the Randy Campo Lectureship Fund may be sent to: Department of Development, Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, Randy V. Campo Lectureship Fund, 900 NW 17th St, Miami, FL 33101.
